National Day celebrated with balcony flags and musicians in the street

National News // Aug. 3, 2020

Switzerland celebrated its National Day over the weekend - but in a much more low-key way than usual - due to coronavirus restrictions.

Many fireworks displays across the country were cancelled - as social distancing guidelines made it impossible in most cases for the displays to take place.

With gatherings of more than 1000 people banned, the Swiss found other ways to celebrate, including hanging Swiss flags from balconies across the country and musicians playing in the streets.

The Swiss President Simonetta Sommaruga gave a video address to the nation and to Swiss nationals living around the world.

She said: “In each of your host countries, you represent Switzerland and its democratic values,” adding: “These values cannot be taken for granted; you have to fight to defend them again and again.”

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump sent congratulations to “the people of the Swiss Confederation” in a message posted on the US embassy in Switzerland’s website.
