National Day celebrations largely cancelled due to Covid restrictions
This year’s National Day celebrations on August 1st are set to be a damp squib, due to large-scale cancellations, because of Covid-19.
Gatherings of more than 1,000 people remain banned until the end of August.
All federal events are off – including the traditional party on the Grütli Meadow – said to be the birthplace of Switzerland when the first cantons were formed in 1291.
Communes and cities across the country have also cancelled their celebrations, including concerts in Bern outside the federal palace.
But smaller, private celebrations are expected with homegrown firework displays. Toni Bussmann, the head of the country’s largest fireworks company, Bugano, says he hopes private sales will help offset the loss of the professional sales.
