Canton Geneva to pay CHF 315m to neighbouring France this year
Canton Geneva will pay CHF 315m this year to the two neighboring French départments as part of an international agreement.
The deal has been in place since 1973 and transfers 3.5% of the tax collected at source by cross-border workers.
Last year it was CHF 310m. Haute-Savoie gets the bulk of the cash, over 76% - the rest goes to Ain.
The money should be used mainly for infrastructure.
Four years ago, the anti-frontalier party – The Geneva Citizens Movement – tried to get the money transfer stopped. But the initiative failed to collect enough signatures to go to a vote.
