Tourist industry set for bleak summer season
Despite efforts to get all of us to take our summer breaks in Switzerland – it will be a bleak season for the tourist industry this year.
Figures from the Swiss Economic Institute suggests the hotel sector alone will lose almost CHF 2bn.
The main losses will be from international tourists. The institute says there’ll be 60% fewer visitors from abroad.
But there are hopes there will be a modest recovery during the summer with Alpine regions and Ticino seeing an uplift in the second half of the season.
Tourist buses and trains will restart next week. Border controls with neighboring countries, except Italy, will be lifted from June 15th, and travel within the Schengen zone will be unrestricted from July 6th.
