Finance minister worries about EU stability as pandemic takes its toll
The finance minister says Switzerland is stronger outside the EU – but he warns the financial crises due to the pandemic are a danger to the country.
Ueli Maurer was speaking to Swiss TV. He says a strong EU is vital for the country, but the debt level in Europe is dangerous – especially in Italy, which he says is a important customer.
Maurer says the Swiss system is better and that the current EU debt redistribution plan is taking this country further away from the EU.
He says the EUR 500bn aid package put forward by France and Germany for the EU is a good start, but it needs to be signed off by the other countries. He worries about the stability of the EU in the future – which would be a negative for Switzerland.
