Border to open to tourist traffic from June 15th
The borders between Switzerland and France, Germany and Austria will be open to tourist traffic again from June 15th – but checks will be significantly reduced from Friday. Although the Justice Minister, Karin Keller-Sutter says the final decision will depend on the level of infections.
The frontier with Italy is likely to stay closed for a while longer.
It’s hoped the border openings will be carried across the passport free Schengen Zone, so it will be possible to drive from Switzerland into Spain, for example.
The EU says when countries have a similar level of outbreak and similar precautionary measures in place – then the borders should be opened.
It also says the borders should be open to everyone, not just nationals of the countries concerned.
The aim is to salvage as much of the tourist industry as possible. It accounts for 10% of EU GDP and 12% of jobs, say the EU.
Yesterday 33 more people tested positive for the virus, down from 36 the previous day.
