Fines are issued for crossing at unauthorised border crossings, damage to barriers and there’s a 100 CHF fine for ‘shopping tourism’.

The problem is worse in some regions than in others - with the highest number of violations in the Canton of Geneva.

The army has 50 professional and 750 civilian soldiers deployed to police the country’s borders.
