Not only is wasting food morally wrong – its also a major driver of climate change.

That’s the conclusion following a major study by the ETH university in Zurich commissioned by the Federal Environment Office.

The study shows good food being wasted in Switzerland contributes four million tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere. That’s half of all the CO2 generated by cars and trucks.

The waste is from heating greenhouses, tractors and pointless deliveries.

The Environment Office is working on a plan to halve food waste by 2030. To start, it points out the average person throws out CHF 600 worth of good food every year.
