Parents have no right to home-school, court rules

National News // By Tay Kinnear // Sept. 17, 2019

The Federal Court has ruled that parents do not have the right to home-school their children.

The case follows a mother in canton Basel City who wanted to home school her eight-year-old daughter. The canton refused permission.

The woman claimed the refusal violated her right to a private family life.

The court disagreed and added no international treaty confers the right to home-school children.

The ruling means it is up to the cantons to allow home-schooling or not. Some refuse completely – others have strict rules.

Canton Vaud has the most home-schooled children – but authorities are considering introducing tighter rules there as well.
