French water plant raises concerns in Bern
Plans to open a mineral water bottling plant in the French border town of Divonne-les-Bains is now being discussed at a Swiss federal level.
The project in France wants to take local ground water and bottle it.
Concerns have already been raised about more traffic -especially trucks – heading into the Geneva and Vaud regions. The water company says it believes Geneva will be a major market.
But national MP, Carlo Sommaruga, says the amount of water required will reduce the flow of the Versoix river, which drains into Lake Geneva.
The Swiss government says the amount of pumping proposed is not enough to require the French contact the Swiss.
