More people being poisoned by catapillars

National News // Sept. 2, 2019

More people are being poisoned by the processionary caterpillar. Contact with the tiny hairs that line the animal can cause severe burns, allergic reactions and even trigger asthma.

Dogs that sniff the caterpillar can also be burnt.

The caterpillars – and the equally dangerous moth – are spreading across Europe, and Switzerland is seeing more people contacting the toxic helpline.

Last year 45 asked for help – the year before just 11. But experts believe the numbers are likely to be higher as not everyone will call the hotline.

If you see the caterpillars, don’t touch them and keep animals away and call local health authorities.
