New tunnel will make Ticino even closer
The new Ceneri Base Tunnel in Ticino will be officially opened in September next year by the president, say the government.
It will make getting to Lugano faster and is part of the Alpine Link which was given the go ahead by voters 28 years ago.
While it will be faster for train passengers, one of the main reasons for the new tunnel is to carry freight from the north to the south – reducing the number of trucks on the roads.
Trains will start running at the end of next year.
