Press slams EFTA for deal with South America during Amazon wildfires
The Swiss press is united in slamming a decision by the European Free Trade Area to sign a deal with the South American grouping, Mercosur.
The group includes Brazil. Massive wildfires are devastating the Amazonian rainforest and many are blaming the policies of the country’s right-wing leader, Jair Bolsonaro.
The NZZ paper says the prospect of a deal should be use to pressure Brazil. The Sonntagsblick called the Economics Minister Guy Parmelin, Bolsonaro’s useful fool and the deal is damaging Switzerland’s reputation.
Even the more balanced Swiss Television says the timing is unfortunate.
The deal still needs to be ratified by EFTA countries.
