Do we still go to the cinema?
The death of the movie theatre has been predicted for many years, but the latest numbers from the Statistics Office show there are the same number of big screens in Switzerland as there were in the 1960s, at 600.
But in the last 50 years the vast majority of single screen cinemas have closed to be replaced by multiplexes – meaning the number of cinemas has fallen, but the screens remain the same.
But we are going less. In the 1980s, there were 21 million ticket sales per year – last year, just 12 million. Swiss cinema going reflects the European average.
Only a quarter of the films in the cinema are Hollywood blockbusters – but they account for 67% of admissions. 6% of films are Swiss.
