Geneva shops to open on Sundays, but only three times a year
Shops in Geneva are to open on just three Sundays a year for a two-year trial period
Shops in Geneva are to open on just three Sundays a year for a two-year trial period, after voters narrowly approved a new law on Sunday opening hours.
The new law was accepted by 52.5% of voters in Geneva yesterday.
Supporters of the change say that it is an important step in trying to mitigate the trend of locals travelling further afield to do their shopping.
However, trade unions are concerned that no collective agreement has yet been negotiated for workers in the retail sector, although double pay on Sundays and time off the week before or after have been agreed.
It’s not yet clear which three Sundays will be chosen, but two are likely to be in the run up to Christmas.
