Then there were very few clues. The leg did have a size 38 sneaker on the foot. A search by a dog specially trained to find bodies turned up nothing.

Now police in the German city of Stuttgart say they believe the leg is from a 39-year-old woman who went missing in August last year. When last see she was said to have been in a confused state.

While there is still no sign of the rest of the body, police say they believe the woman had already been dead for several weeks before the leg became detached.
