Members of a fishing organization in canton Aargau are demanding the power from the Benznau nuclear plant is cut back as the local river water is becoming dangerously hot.

The plant uses the water to cool its reactors. But with the current heatwave – the water is just getting hotter.

The temperature on Saturday evening was at 27.1 degrees. A spokesman for a local water conservation group says anything above 25 degrees is dangerous for local wildlife.

Experts believe the plant adds more than a degree to the water temperature.

Also breaking records is the Rhone river in Geneva. Over the weekend the river temperature hit 27.6 degrees. The previous high at 27.4 was reached in July 2006.
