Young swans drown due to too many people
Animal protection groups in Schaffhausen say young swans are drowning as there are too many people on the lake shores the cygnets are unable to land.
Ricky Meyer from Animal Rescue Schaffhausen says a few weeks ago there were 23 young swans – now there are none left in the wild. Eight have been rescued close to death.
Meyer says the normal landing spots for the animals was the jetty, but the warm weather has brought out sun seekers and rubber boats, blocking access to the land.
The cygnets then become exhausted in the water and drown.
The canton says it was previously unaware of the problem, but a spokesman says they will work quickly for a solution.
