Geneva taxis want more rights to use bus lanes
The law could be changed in Geneva to allow taxis to use bus lanes even when they’re empty. Currently taxis are only allowed to use the lanes when carrying a customer. But the taxi companies complain they’re losing business as it takes too long for them to get to a fare.
The local party, MCG, has tabled a bill in the cantonal parliament to change the law.
Traditional taxis are under pressure because of the ride sharing app Uber.
Bus lanes take up 30% of roads in the canton and taxi drivers pay CHF 1,400 a year for their licence.
