Whats on at the UN? "We're at breaking point" - UN Syria Coordinator
Daniel Johnson from the UN gives us more details on the crisis in Syria as the UN Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for the Syria Crisis, Panos Moumtzis, says that they're “at breaking point”.
“The humanitarian response on the ground is really at a breaking point. We are stretched to the maximum. We are literally from hand to mouth, emptying warehouses, working around the clock with a massive response on all fronts…we’ve had teams working, receiving at three in the morning, massive numbers of people, and always trying to find places to host them, within host communities, empty buildings, within makeshift camps, we are really making use of every possible inch in Idlib to be able to receive, to accommodate and to respond to the needs on the ground.”
This is timely as the UNHCR will also hold a press conference later this week on global forced displacement trends with Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
The Human Rights Council summer session begins again next week and will run until 6th July.
Daniel also tells us about the Mix&Mash event which will be held at the Brasserie des Halles de l’Île on Tuesday, 12 June 2018 from 6 p.m. This is open to all who would like to find out more about the United Nations; to meet people from all ages and from all over the world, locals and expats, who call Geneva home.
