UN Roundup - Yemen, Belarus & the UN General Assembly
21 September 2020
1: UN Special Envoy for Yemen Martin Griffiths has welcomed the start of UN-sponsored talks on Yemen (with the ICRC) which hinges on prisoner releases between the two sides (Government vs mainly Houthi opposition who hold the capital, Sana’a) as part of a deal agreed in Sweden in 2018.
2: Last week, the Human Rights Council’s 45th session saw a fascinating Urgent Debate about Belarus last Friday which ended in a successful resolution bid for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to monitor the post-election situation there.
3: It is also the start of the UN General Assembly which is for the first time, almost entirely virtual. This is a major test for international cooperation in the UN’s 75th year, but as usual, world leaders will convene to share their vision for the year ahead, albeit not at UNHQ in New York.
4: WHO chief Tedros has said that it’s a crucial moment for the world to work together to fight COVID and a new pandemic, which is “inevitable”…
