With the cold winter winds howling about our ears, it's very tempting to stay indoors and forget about the garden. But how do the plants outside manage to survive? Rene Smulders of Wageningen University explains how their research on winter hardiness in roses helped to create a new range of roses hardy down to minus 5 C, the Winter Jewels series produced by Phenogeno. They are prefect for eastern and northern Europe as well as Canada, and why not Switzerland as well?
