Dig It! Lawn alternatives (4 February 2019)

Dig It! // Gardening & Green Spaces// WRS// General // Feb. 4, 2019

This week's show was inspired by a client consultancy from last year. The clients were looking for ways to reduce their watering and drought-proof their garden, and one of the things we looked at was to remove or reduce their lawn, and what to plant instead. We looked at wild flower meadows or replanting with Vincas or Liriope, as well as trying one of the ZHAW Grüental at Wädenswil trial mixes. ZHAW has a wonderful garden at their Wädenswil garden, it's open to the public, packed with lovely plants and worth a visit at any time of the year. For details go to their website here https://www.zhaw.ch/en/lsfm/about-us/an-open-university/gardens-in-grueental/

One of the most interesting parts of the garden is the large squares where they are trialling perennial mixes, combinations of different perennial plants including grasses, flowering bulbs and more. Nils Honegger, the garden manager, explained why they had started the trial and how successful the mixes are. You can find plant lists here, (only in German, but the plant names are in Latin, so you can buy your own easily) from Jardin Suisse http://www.pflanzanleitung.ch/de/staudenmischpflanzungen/
