Dig It! Bulbs (15 January 2018)

Dig It! // Gardening & Green Spaces// WRS// General // Jan. 15, 2018

This time of the year for me is all about bringing the outdoors indoors. I like to cut the odd branch of winter flowering shrubs like Viburnum, or pot up some snowdrops to put on a key windowsill to enjoy at close quarters. Another way is to put a bulb, like a hyacinth, tulip or amaryllis in a bulb vase and enjoy the development of the stems and roots as the flower begins to open. Bulb vases have a long and glorious history, reaching their peak in the 1700s, and are a perfect way to show off a prize bloom. Rahel Koller is a scientific glass blower by trade, but has managed to combine her trade and her love of gardening by producing a range of modern bulb vases. She was showing lots of surprising plants in her bulb vases, carrots, beets and sweet potatoes as well as the more traditional flower bulbs. You can check out her work on www.glaslabor.ch
