Dig It Bamboo 7 May 2018

Dig It! // Gardening & Green Spaces// WRS// General // May 7, 2018

There are lots of bamboos on the market, suitable for all kind of situations. This week's show mentions Phyllostachys aureosulcata, a golden-stemmed bamboo that grows to about 6m, and also Phyllostachs viridis, with green stems, which reaches about the same size and is equally cold-resistant, down to -25C. We also mentioned Phyllostachys bissetii, a lighter green colour and reaches about 4m, which, with the previous plants, is also a "running" type so should be planted in the garden with care or in a pot. The new Fargesia murielae "Elias" is perfect for a pot, a miniauture hedge, or as ground cover. It is a clumping form, so it won't escape into other gardens, and it's hardy down to -25C and won't get taller than 50cm. Van Vliet New Plants won a medal for it in 2017 at Groot Groen Plus in Zundert in the Netherlands
