An incredible stay in Ticino

Mid Morning Mix// The Breakfast Show // Events// Family// Style// Explore Switzerland// Food & Drink// Travel // Sept. 5, 2019

The WRS team took a trip to Ticino to find out more about this Italian-speaking, palm-tree lined canton.

We spoke to locals and professionals about the best spots to taste authentic Italian food, or take a cooking course to make authentic risotto ourselves. We learnt the top tips to booking your hotel room at the best price, the best places to shop at discount prices and where to sample authentic local beers and wines (try the white Merlot!). With plenty of great hiking tours, gastronomy tours and easy transport tickets, we learn the best way to discover the canton and gave away goodies throughout the morning.

Veronica Lafranchi from Ticino Tourism tells us about the of grottos of Ticino. Located amongst nature, the original grottos have always been the perfect place to eat local cheese and cold cuts, but now many grottos also have hot dishes, such as risotto or polenta, available.

Veronica tells us where best to try the local wines and just enough Italian to order a glass...

With a Bellinzona Pass, it's easy to access the castles and other cultural sites of Bellinzona. Debora Beeler from Bellinzonese e Alto Ticino tells us how we could tie in a trip with an event in Bellinzona, such as the pumpkin festival or cheese market...

Manuela Nicoletti from Ticino Tourism is really taking advantage of all Ticino has to offer. Her weekend starts with live music on Friday night. On Saturday she's doing an organised gastronomical hike which will stop of at 10 locations throughout Ascona and sample specialities. On Sunday she intends to find the best bargains and will head to Ticino's discount shopping centre after a quick paddleboard on Lake Lugano. Sounds like a great weekend to me!

The Hotel Internazionale in Bellinzona is handily located directly opposite the train station, making the location perfect for a quick city break to Bellinzona! The hotel was built in 1914 and was a family run business for nearly a century. Michele Santini is now General Manager and has been working at the hotel since its renovations a decade ago. He tells us how to get the best rates when you book. Make sure you book early to secure a room during Carnivale!

Fancy getting off the grid? Valle Bavona may be for you. This is where you can find traditional stone houses. Or how about getting into nature and going on a hike? Veronica Lafranchi from Ticino Tourism tells us about this option, as well as canyoning if you're searching for a thrill...

Nadia Fontana Lupi from Mendrisiotto Tourism takes us on a journey from Botta's new "stone-flower" building on Monte Generoso to fossils around Monte San Giorgio. We talk about wine and how to take your time in the vineyards as well as experiencing a wide range of wines in a short time. For the ultimate getaway, Nadia gives us some top tips to experience silence and enjoy sensational sunsets.

Alessandra de Stefano tells us about the guided excursions in Lugano throughout Autumn and Winter if you fancy a getaway later in the year. The Autumn Food Festival offers chestnuts, folk music and much more!

For all hose who love their food, Alessandra tells us about the Taste My Swiss City voucher...

The Swiss Travel Pass is an ideal way to travel around Switzerland on boats, trains and buses. Andreas Nef from Swiss Travel System tells us about the World's densest travel network and the must-do sights and how best to see them from the comfort of a panoramic train.

There are 12 World Heritage Sites in Switzerland and two of them are in Ticino. Andrea Calzascia from World Heritage Experience Switzerland tells us about them and a little bit about their history...

Whether extreme sports like bungy jumping appeal, or perhaps a nice saltwater spa instead, Jeanne Gerber from Ascona-Lucarno tells us about some different activities.

There's golf, stand-up paddleboarding and mountainbiking available with equipment available to rent. For those that would prefer a gentle stroll amongst palm trees, this is the perfect place too. Settimane Musicale throughout Septembre and October is a must-do for Classical Music lovers.
