10,000-year-old oak discovered

A 10,500 year old oak tree was discovered last year by construction workers in Schlieren, in the canton of Zurich.

We now know it belongs to the first generation of oak trees to have appeared since the last ice age in Europe, say experts.

The ancient relic was buried nearly three meters underground and measures four meters long with a trunk half a meter thick.

It’s not yet on display. Such finds are extremely rare in Europe.
