Life is cheap in Appenzell Inner Rhodes

Where you live has a major impact on how much cash is left in your pocket at the end of the month.

Different regions in Switzerland compete furiously to offer low tax rates. But tax rates alone are not the only factor in making a place cheap or expensive. How much rent do you pay, how high are your health insurance premiums and what about utility costs? 

Credit Suisse has crunched the numbers in all of Switzerland’s 2,700 municipalities - to calculate disposable income. It’s a repeat of a study conducted in 2006 and it has thrown up a few surprises. For example, the tax advantage in a canton like Zug is offset by increased living costs.

WRS’s Vincent Landon spoke to Credit Suisse economist Thomas Rühl and began by asking him how much extra cash a family could have just by changing address.
