Jurist questions anti-minaret vote
Rightwingers calling for a ban on the construction of minarets in Switzerland have handed in the necessary signatures to force a nationwide ballot. The Swiss cabinet wasted little time in coming out against the controversial proposal amid fears that it could provoke a backlash in Muslim countries. But already there are question marks over whether the issue will ever make it on to a ballot paper. Some argue that a ban on minarets would contravene international law. WRS’s Pete Forster spoke to Marcel Stüssi, a researcher at Lucerne University, who has written a paper on the legal validity of the initiative.
