Guantanamo prisoners hope for asylum in Switzerland
The notorious Guantanamo Bay prison camp will, according to the Americans, be closed down. However, the fate of its prisoners is still up in the air. Fifty of the 255 prisoners have already been acquitted but can’t be freed because no one knows where to send them. This is because under U.S. law you can’t deport anyone to a country where they could be at risk of persecution, torture or death. Switzerland has already rejected asylum requests from three individuals from Libya, Algeria and China. Their American lawyers have been invited to Switzerland by Amnesty International. WRS’s Conor Lennon spoke to one of them, Emi McLean:

I believe it is important that these people’s wishes are taken into account. Where do they want to go? Hopefully they will be able to overcome and forgive people for what has been done to them.
