Former UBS banker to answer tax evasion charge
Former UBS private banker Bradley Birkenfeld is expected to appear before a judge in Florida today to enter a guilty plea in a tax evasion investigation. Birkenfeld is accused—along with Mario Staggls, a trust manager from Liechtenstein—of conspiring to defraud the U.S. by helping wealthy clients evade taxes. You can find the court documents below.
Birkenfeld allegedly helped one of his main clients, Oleg Olenicoff, hide an estimated $200 million from the U.S. Internal Revenue Service. The plea hearing is seen as another major blow to the Swiss bank already been hit hard by the subprime loans crisis. WRS’s Michele Mischler spoke to U.S.-based journalist Katja Schaer about the trial and lawyer Charles Poncet about the legal issues raised by the case.
