In a few weeks, drilling works for the future Gotthard rail tunnel will be over. It will be the longest of its kind in the world at 57 km and, therefore, an important schedule for transport minister Moritz Leuenberger, who plans to celebrate the big day along with other European transport ministers. And while everybody’s attention is turned toward the gigantic site underneath the Gotthard mountain, the good old road tunnel of the Gotthard is going to celebrate its 30th anniversary on Sunday, September 5.
However, the tunnel needs several urgent and important works to keep up with safety norms, and in order to do the job, the tunnel must be totally closed, probably for a long period of time. Just how long is causing many residents of Ticino and Italy to worry. Susan Flory is joined by Nicole della Pietra, Ticino and Northern Italy’s correspondent for Radio Suisse Romande, to talk about a secret file that the Federal Department of Transport has been keeping from the public.
